J.J. Abrams First Discovers the Hatch

I came across this in my first viewing of Season 1 of Alias.  And if you blink you can miss it.  But there is a scene in episode 9 (Alias) (see the Alias screen caps) that is reminiscent of a certain scene at the end of Season 1 of Lost.  I can't help but think (after hearing J.J. Abrams speech at TED) that the opening of this little mystery box, however brief and inconsequential it was in Alias, was the seed for an entire new television show.

Now if I could only find the germination of Alias somewhere in Felicity the world would be complete.

Nice theory! As a JJ Abrams fangirl, who's been following since Felicity, I'm almost certain you can find connections with all of his shows. I always joke that every relationship storyline (in Lost, Alias, etc) is the "Felicity" moment.

There are some crazy subtle references in Cloverfield to both Alias and Lost. It's awesome.

There's a logo from Lost (Dharma Initiative) early on in Cloverfield. Also, Slusho! is a drink that appeared in Alias that is created by the fictional Japanese parent company that supposedly awakens the Cloverfield monster, (and also employs the main character of Cloverfield -- in the movie he is promoted to VP and has to move to Japan.)

I feel like a huge nerd for knowing this.

From the TED Talk: "This mystery box represents infinite possibility." Infinite possibility is awesome.

whoa now, slow down.  where did you learn that the Slusho "awakened" the monster.  I don't remember any of that in my "research".

From a totally disreputable fan forum: "JJ stated himself that the monster has been down at the bottom of the ocean for thousands of years. What fell into the ocean at the end of the movie was a satelitte. If you pay attention to the viral marketing, Taragutu's site states that one of their satelittes fell out of orbit and was lost. This is what woke up the monster from its dormant state."

There IS a satellite that falls into the ocean for just a split second during the last flashback scene of Cloverfield, where the main character couple is happy and laughing on the ferris wheel in Coney Island.

Also, hilarious article about JJ Abrams as "nerdfotainment": http://www.randsinrepose.com/archives/2008/03/11/nerdfotainment.html

From that link,

"That's right. That's the point. That's why nerds created the Lost Wiki. That's why we replay all the trailers in slow motion. We're looking for that tattoo on the shark in the third episode of the second season because AH HAH! That explains something. I'm just not sure what… yet."

Damn, I have no idea what he's talking about.  I did not rewind the DVR, rewatch it in slow mo and think, for a moment I was the only human being on earth to pick this out.

Thanks JJ.  I wish I was you.

"Because I want it" - Roy Scheinder, Jaws

Just watched the TED interview... and now I know why I love JJ's work so much. He has this amazing gift to create the unordinary, while weaving in relatable human storylines that leaves the stakes higher. Meaning, these characters are more than just action figures that are trapped on an island, trying to escape.

Well, maybe Felicity was all about human storylines, but you gotta start somewhere, right?

The more I watch Alias the more I see the threads. The soundtrack, the evil plot twists, no wonder it's addictive too.
